What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a technique used to improve and smooth the texture of the skin. Facial skin is mostly treated, and scarring can be improved. Chemical peels are intended to remove the outermost layers of the skin. To accomplish this task, the chosen peel solution induces a controlled injury to the skin.

Chemical peels can reduce or improve skin imperfections. Different chemicals determine the depth of your peel and type of skin condition treated, you may be a candidate for chemical peels if you have:

-Fine lines and wrinkles

-Acne scarring or acne

-Mild scarring

-Hyperpigmentation (Melasma/Age spots)

-Precancerous scaly spots

-Uneven skin texture

What is TCA?

TCA (trichloracetic acid) is an analog of acetic acid (like vinegar but much stronger) and is an active ingredient in many popular chemical peels. When applied to the skin, TCA peels exfoliate the skin over the course of several days, the outermost layer and the upper part of your middle skin layer are removed, revealing healthier new skin underneath.  This choice may be best if you have uneven or moderate skin discoloring, age spots, acne, scarring or fine-to-moderate wrinkles. Recovery from this type of peel may take a week or more and require some down time.

How to prepare your skin for a chemical peel:

  • Avoid tanning and direct sun exposure for two weeks before each treatment.
  • Apply topical products (such as hydroquinone) as instructed before treatment to prepare your skin, discontinue four weeks prior.
  • Discontinue use of any products containing retinoids (such as tretinion) one to two weeks prior to treatment, unless specified differently by your physician.
  • Peel areas must be free of any open sores, lesions, or skin infections.
  • If you've had a history of herpes outbreaks, there is a small chance of reactivating the area. your dermatologist can prescribe medication to reduce the chance of a flare up. Follow all instructions given to you by your doctor.

What to expect the day of your peel:

Your skin will be thoroughly cleansed and degreased with a medical grade agent. You will be given a fan to ensure comfort levels. During the peel, solution is applied directly onto your skin, this is accompanied by a warm or hot sensation, followed by a stinging sensation. To relieve this sting, a cool compress will be applied to the skin. The chemical is then washed off or neutralized. After your peel, expect your skin to feel like a mild sunburn, with redness, possible swelling, stinging, and flaking of your skin. If swelling occurs, it may last or worsen for up to 48 hours. Blisters can possibly develop and break open. Your skin will crust and peel off over 7-14 days DO NOT pull, pick, or scratch at the flaking skin!  This is imperative to the healing process to give you the best possible results.
